LASIK, LASEK, PRK
FUNCTION:
These procedures correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism by changing the shape of the cornea.
PROCEDURE:
LASIK: A thin corneal flap is cut, the underlying tissue is shaped with an excimer laser, and the flap is then repositioned.
LASEK: The top layer of the cornea is removed, the underlying tissue is treated with a laser, and the flap is replaced.
PRK: Similar to LASEK, but without the layer being replaced.
HEALING:
LASIK: Short healing time; visual acuity improves within days.
LASEK/PRK: Healing takes longer, up to several weeks, and often requires eye drops to aid recovery.
WHO IS SUITABLE?
Ideal for patients with stable refractive errors and sufficient corneal thickness. LASEK/PRK are particularly suitable for patients with thin corneas.
